Key takeaways

  • A search for “seo experts near me” ranks agencies partly by how close they are to you, so the top result is not a quality ranking.
  • Location matters when the work depends on the local market: local press, local competitors, language, on-site photos and events.
  • Technical SEO, audits, migrations and log file analysis run on data and access, not on a shared postcode.
  • Give any outside expert their own Search Console access instead of your password, and remove it when the work ends.
  • Judge near and remote candidates with the same questions, starting with the ones Google publishes for hiring an SEO.

Most people who type “seo experts near me” want two things: someone good, and someone they can trust. Distance feels like a shortcut to trust. Sometimes it is. Often it only tells you who has the closest office to where you happen to be sitting when you search.

I have worked in SEO and digital marketing for more than 16 years, mostly with clients I have never met in person. Some of that work needed local knowledge I had to borrow. Most of it did not. This article sorts SEO work into the jobs where a local expert earns their place and the jobs where location makes no difference, so you can shortlist on the right evidence.

What a search for “seo experts near me” actually shows you

When you search for any business “near me”, Google usually shows a map with a short list of Business Profiles above the ordinary results. SEO agencies are ranked in that list the same way as plumbers and dentists. Google’s help page on how local ranking works says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity (it calls the last one prominence: how well-known a business is), and that distance means how far each business is from the person searching. If you don’t share where you are, Google uses what it knows about your location.

That has two consequences for anyone hiring:

  • The order changes with where you stand. Search from your office and from your home and you can get a different shortlist. Our article on why your Google rankings look different on every screen explains how location and device change what you see.
  • The list measures how well an agency runs its own profile. That is a useful skill if you want local SEO. It says nothing about whether the agency can fix a broken migration or a crawl problem.

The same Google page is clear that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. So an agency near the top earned it through its profile, its reviews and its reputation, or simply through being close to you.

When a local SEO expert is worth it

Decision flow for choosing between a local and a remote SEO expert, starting with whether the work depends on local market knowledge, in-person access or neither
Figure 1. Sort the job first: local market work, in-person work, or work that runs on data and access.

Google’s own guidance on whether you need an SEO lists “expertise in specific markets and geographies” among the services an SEO can offer, and suggests asking “What’s your experience in my country/city?”. That is the honest case for hiring nearby. Local knowledge pays off when:

  • You compete in a tight local market. A local expert already knows who ranks in the map results for your services, which neighbourhoods matter and which directories and local sites people actually use.
  • You need local links and press. Local news sites, business associations, chambers of commerce and event sponsors are easier to reach for someone who lives in the same city and reads the same local papers.
  • Language and phrasing are regional. People in different regions describe the same service differently. Someone local hears that every day.
  • The work needs a person on site. Photos and video of your premises, filming staff, attending a local event, or helping several branches agree on how they keep their profiles up to date.
  • You run several locations. Checking that each branch matches its real address, hours and categories is easier with someone who can visit.

If most of your enquiries come from people within driving distance, a good part of your SEO is local SEO, and our local SEO service page explains what that work covers. Even then, ask yourself which part of it needs a person in the room. Writing service pages, fixing profile categories and building review routines do not.

When location doesn’t matter: technical work and audits

Technical SEO is done in Search Console, crawlers, server logs, analytics and your CMS. None of those care where the consultant sits. What matters is skill, access and a clear written brief.

Task Does a local expert help? Why
Google Business Profile set-up and categories Somewhat Local knowledge of competitors helps; the work itself is online
Local press, sponsorships, events Yes Relationships and attendance are local
On-site photos and video Yes Someone has to be there
Technical SEO audit No Runs on crawls, Search Console and code
Site migration and redirects No Planning, mapping and testing are done remotely
Log file analysis No Needs server logs, not a visit
Content strategy and keyword research Rarely Local phrasing matters; the research is desk work
Link audit or penalty recovery No Works from link data and Search Console

In my experience, the jobs where a business loses the most search traffic in one go (a migration, a redesign, a hosting change) are almost all in the “no” rows. If that is your problem, hire the person who has done that job many times, wherever they are. A technical SEO consultant in another country who has run dozens of migrations is a safer pair of hands than a generalist down the road who has run none.

I would rather hire the right specialist on a video call than the wrong one across the street.

Technical SEO consultation near me: how remote work stays safe

People who search for a “technical seo consultation near me” are often worried about access. They don’t want to hand their admin password to a stranger in another city. That worry is reasonable, and the answer is to give access properly rather than to hire by postcode.

Three Search Console permission levels compared: owner, full user and restricted user, with what each can do and which one to give an outside consultant
Figure 2. Search Console permission levels as Google describes them. Most outside consultants need a full user seat, not ownership.

Google’s help page on managing Search Console owners, users and permissions describes three levels:

  • Owner: full control, including adding and removing other users.
  • Full user: can view all data and take some actions, but can’t manage users.
  • Restricted user: simple view rights on most data.

For an audit, a full user seat is usually enough. You add it under Settings, then Users and permissions, with the consultant’s Google Account email. The same page warns that when you remove a verified owner you should also delete their verification tokens, or they can verify again. So if you ever had to make someone an owner, clean up properly when the work ends.

Before a remote SEO starts work

  • Create named accounts for Search Console, analytics and the CMS. Never share your own login.
  • Give the lowest permission level that lets them do the job.
  • Agree in writing what they may change on the live site and what needs your approval.
  • Keep a log of who has access to what, with a start date.
  • When the work ends, remove access and check for leftover verification tokens.

None of this depends on distance. A local agency with careless access habits is a bigger risk than a remote consultant who asks for a full user seat and a written scope.

How to judge the best local SEO experts near me (or far away)

Whether the candidate is ten minutes away or two time zones away, the test is the same. Start with the questions Google publishes for hiring an SEO. They include:

  • “Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?”
  • “Do you follow the Google Search Essentials”?
  • “What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe?”
  • “How do you measure your success?”
  • “What’s your experience in my industry?”

The same page lists the red flags. No one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google, so walk away from anyone who promises it. Be wary of firms that email you out of the blue, that won’t explain what they intend to do, or that claim a special relationship with Google. I went through that guidance in more detail in what Google itself says an SEO can and can’t do.

One local-specific check: look at their own Business Profile

If you are hiring for local SEO, the agency’s own profile is a free sample of their work. Google’s guidelines for representing your business say a service-area business can’t list a “virtual” office unless that office is staffed during business hours, and that a rented mailing address the business doesn’t operate from isn’t eligible for a profile. The guidelines also say unnecessary information in a business name isn’t permitted.

So look at the profile that ranked for you. Is the name the real company name, or a string of keywords? Does the address look like a real, staffed office? An agency that bends the rules on its own profile will do the same on yours, and the risk falls on your business.

What "local" should mean in a proposal

  • Named people who know your market, not a city name on the website.
  • Evidence of local work you can check yourself: profiles, local pages, local coverage.
  • A clear split between the local tasks and the remote ones, priced separately.
  • No promise about map positions, since Google says no one can pay for a better local ranking.

A simple way to decide: local, remote or both

Most businesses I speak to don’t need to choose one model. They need to split the work.

  1. List the jobs. Write down what you actually need this year: an audit, a migration, new service pages, local links, profile clean-up.
  2. Mark each job by figure 1. Local market knowledge, in-person presence, or data and access.
  3. Hire for the biggest risk first. If a technical problem is costing you traffic, fix that with the best specialist you can find. Location is irrelevant.
  4. Add local help only where it is needed. A local photographer, a local PR contact or a part-time local marketer can cover the in-person tasks without a full agency retainer.
  5. Keep one person accountable. Whoever leads should report against the same numbers each month, whatever their location.

That is how I work at onwardSEO. I am based in Bucharest, I charge by the hour, and I take on the technical, audit and strategy work remotely, with written scopes and named access. When a client needs someone on the ground, I say so and help them brief that person. If you want to see what a remote engagement looks like in practice, the SEO website audit page shows the scope, and you can read more about me and how I work.

FAQ

Should I only hire SEO experts near me?

Only if most of the work is local: local press, local events, on-site photos or several branches to visit. For audits, technical fixes, migrations and content strategy, location makes little difference, and the best specialist may be in another city or country. Many businesses get the best result from a remote specialist plus some local help.

Does a technical SEO consultation near me cost less than a remote one?

Not because of distance. Price depends on the consultant’s experience, the size of the site and how the work is billed, by the hour, by project or by retainer. Compare written scopes and the hours behind them, not postcodes.

How do I find the best local SEO experts near me?

Use the map results as a starting list, then check each agency’s own Business Profile against Google’s guidelines, ask Google’s published hiring questions and ask for local work you can verify. Rule out anyone who guarantees a number one ranking.

Is it safe to give a remote SEO access to my website?

Yes, if you give access properly. Add the consultant to Search Console as a full or restricted user with their own Google Account, give named CMS accounts with the lowest permissions that work, and remove access when the job ends. Never share your own passwords.

Tell me which SEO jobs are on your list this year, and I will help you sort which ones need someone local and which ones I can take on remotely.
